Great with other Africans, but is known to be aggressive toward other smaller fish. Ominously identified also as the Malawi Eye Biter, it is said that this fish has a penchant for the softer eye tissue of smaller fish. This is presumably a tactic for its prey to confuse the fish before eating it. Fans of the Compressiceps will defend its stately appearance and stature by saying that no fish of appropriate "nibbling size" should be in an aquarium with any African Cichlid in any case. African Catfish such as Synodontis Catfish make great scavengers in an aquarium with this fish. As an omnivore that does require some vegetation in its diet, its specialized mouth will help it scrape algae and vegetable matter from rocks. Cichlid Vegi Formula and PetSolutions Cichlid Food would be good when supplemented with Bloodworms and Tubifex Worms. This handsome and strikingly-shaped fish requires a great deal of swimming space and clean, well-aerated water.
