Originally described by Gunther in 1864 as Cichlasoma labiatum, The generic name Red Devil applies to the general coloration of the fish; the adult shows a red/orange body color, and to its behavior. The Red Devil is very aggressive, especially towards other cichlids. It loves to dig in the substrate and will constantly rearrange the décor of the aquarium. Juveniles may be gray with black striping, but they develop a red/orange body color as they mature. They may also have a few white blotches and black freckles on the body.
