Wolf Cichlid (Dovii)
First described by Gunther in 1864 as Parachromis dovii, the Wolf Cichlid is one of the larger Central American cichlids, capable of growing to 28 inches in length! An extremely territorial cichlid, the Dovii will not tolerate other cichlids in the same aquarium. Best kept as a harem, one male and several females or as a pair. The female will have a blunt snout and less coloration than the male, while the male will also have a nuchal hump. The general body color is silver/gray with black along the midline from the gills to the base of the tail. The male will develop and blue/green snout and fins, with a violet cast to the body. The Dovii is an open spawner releasing as many as 1000 eggs across the substrate. A true predator, the Dovii will accept prepared foods and should be fed meaty foods like shrimp, krill and bloodworms. One of the largest cichlids, the natural conditions have a Hardness up to 20 dGH and a pH of 7.0. Most available are now farm raised.
