Tobacco Basslet
Tobacco Basslet,Serranus tabacarius, is a hardy, colorful, fish that will not bother corals in the reef aquarium. This durable fish grows to a larger size than other members of its species, but still retains the hermaphroditic trait. Harmful only to some smaller fish and ornamental fish, the Tobacco Basslet does well in groups and creates a dramatic display, but must be given adequate space to prevent aggression amongst themselves. If more than one is to be present in the same aquarium, it is recommended to introduce them at the same time. This Western Atlantic native lives in waters ranging from Southern Florida to the reefs of the Caribbean. The coloration of the Tobacco Basslet also makes it a desirable fish: black and white mottling covers a portion of the body. The lower body of more dominant specimens is enveloped by a glowing coppery sheen. As a carnivore, it readily accepts meaty meals including Brine Shrimp and frozen prepared foods.
