Found in the Rio Tocantins and Rio Araguaia, the juvenile coloration has a light, whitish body with dark vertical “tiger” stripes. The fins will show a yellow background. As the fish matures, it may develop a more reticulated pattern, especial along the head and gill areas. Most are now farm raised. The Tiger Pleco is fairly sociable and will do fine with most small to medium Community Fish. The under slung mouth of the pleco acts as a suction devise to hold it in place, and to allow the specialized teeth to rasp algae off of rocks, plants and glass. This makes the pleco one of the best eaters of algae, its primary job in the home aquarium.
