Spotted Mandarin Goby
Spotted Mandarin Goby, Synchiropus picturatus, has the personality and poise to be quite an enjoyable fish, if the correct environment for survival is provided. The yellow-green body is accented with blue, orange, and red "targets" resembling bullseyes. Longevity of any member of this family is dependent on a well-established aquarium with a great deal of Live Rock and Live Sand. The specially-formed mouth of Mandarins is designed to pluck microbial organisms from the rock to satisfy its carnivorous diet requirements. Brine Shrimp, Blood Worms, and Black Worms should all be accepted by Mandarins. Dry and pellet foods might not be accepted, even after becoming accustomed to aquarium life. Males have an elongated dorsal spine when compared to females. Males in the same aquarium are likely to be territorial and may bicker, unless provided with plenty of room to establish separate territories. For any aquarist who is willing to learn about the needs of the Mandarin and who is willing to put the right effort into providing the special needs of this fish, the reward is great. Also know as the Psychedelic Mandarinfish, the retro appearance and animated personality of this Indo-Pacific fish is sure to catch the attention of observers.
