South American Puffer
South American Puffer, Colomesus asellus, is one of the more peaceful freshwater puffers available to home aquarists. While it should definitely not be kept with smaller tetras, it will typically do fine with fish of equal or larger size. It may likely nip the fins or slower moving or more timid aquarium mates. Tolerant of freshwater or brackish water, this Amazon native has an attractive green-yellow coloration with a mottling of black. As with other Puffers, it should not be kept with smaller snails, crustaceans, and mollusks, as these compose a large portion of its natural diet. Bloodworms and Tubifex Worms (in addition to a high quality pellet food) will help sate the appetite of this eager eater. Hard, alkaline water in the 76-82° F range is ideal.
Approximate Arrival Size for South American Puffer: 1.5 to 2.5 in.
