Sleeper Goby
The Sleeper Goby is a unique fish that adds personality to the home aquarium. Described by Bloch in 1785, the Sleeper Goby is more correctly known as the Dormitator maculatus. Found in freshwater and brackish waters of North and South America, the Sleeper Goby is an omnivore that will eat plant material and small insects. In the aquarium it will accept most prepared foods, with treats of bloodworms and algae discs. Growing to a possible 10” in the wild, the Sleeper will mature after about 1 year. It has not been known to spawn in the aquarium, but mature males will have extended second rays of the dorsal fin and may develop hump on top of its relatively flat head. The body is compressed and silver to olive green, with multiple red/brown flecks at the ends of the scales and within the fins. The dorsal fin is split into two fins and the ventral fins are modified to help hold the goby in place as it perches on the rocks. The Sleeper Goby will prefer some hiding places among the plants or rocks and is rather sedentary. Peaceful with fish it cannot eat.
