Scats start out in fresh water as babies and gradually move to more and more salty areas until they move to heavily brackish or full saltwater areas. Anyone contemplating keeping scats or other brackish water fish needs to be prepared to adjust the water to higher and higher salt content as the fish matures. Scats are sometimes called the vacuum cleaner of the aquarium, because they will eat just about any kind of food and they are even known to eat feces in the aquarium. This fish gets very large as an adult, roughly the size of an average dinner plate, so a six foot long tank is recommended.
