Signifer Rainbow

Found in northern Australia, the Signifer Rainbow, also called a Blue Eye Rainbow was properly described as Pseudomugil signifer by Kner in 1864. A peaceful schooling fish, it does best with a single male and several females. General body color is yellow/gold with black leading edges to the fins. The male will develop red color on the anal fin during courtship. The split dorsal fin and extended anal fin give the fish its distinctive shape and a “twitching” motion when it moves. Only growing to less than 2 inches in length, the Signifer Rainbow makes a great addition to a Community style aquarium. They prefer a generous space for schooling, with some plant cover for spawning. Natural water conditions are somewhat hard water with a neutral pH value. The Blue Eye Rainbow also makes a great candidate for a species-only aquarium since the adults will not eat the fry, allowing several generations of the Rainbow to grow up in the same aquarium. In the wild they eat small insects and some plant material and will accept meaty prepared foods in the aquarium. Care should be taken when moving from one water type to another, slowly acclimate to the new water over a period of 2 hours.
