Shovelnose Cat

Scientific Name: Sorubim lima
Recommended Aquarium: 75+ Gallons
Approx. Adult Size: 8 inches
Temperament: Aggressive
Ease of Care: Easy
Diet: Carnivore
Native Waters: South America

Described by Bloch and Schneider in 1806 and known in the aquarium trade as the Shovel Nose Catfish, this carnivore is often found in a head down position, hovering over rocks or within plants. The Shovel Nose will wait for edible sized fish/worms or insects that cross its path. It obviously should only be housed in an aquarium with fish too large to swallow, but not too aggressive, as the catfish is rather defenseless. With a long, flattened body and head; the large mouth is terminated with several long barbells for seeking out food. The upper half of the fish is dark brown/black, while the belly is white. It can adapt to meaty frozen foods and earthworms in place of live fish. Treat as a smooth skin catfish when treating for parasite infestations.

Approximate arrival size for Shovelnose Catfish: 2 to 4 inches
