Serpent Starfish

Serpent Starfish, Ophioderma appressum for Atlantic, Ophiolepis superba for Tiger, and Ophioderma sp. for Red Tiger, exists in great numbers throughout the Indo-Pacific and the world and is often seen in amassed in groupings in the thousands. These stars are brown or cream decorated maroon or red markings. It is one of the hardest working aquarium cleaners available to our hobby. They are wonderful reef inhabitants that always seem to be looking for some uneaten bit of food and have the ability to get into just about any space. Acclimation should be extended over many hours, as starfish are sensitive to changes in temperature, pH, and specific gravity. Starfish are also completely intolreant of any copper in aquarium water, including copper-based medications. The Tiger Serpent is also known as the Harlequin Serpent Star, this echinoderm is best added to a reef aquarium where it can graze on algae and other microorganisms.

Notes: Starfish are extremely sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters and to the presence of copper. Extra care and time should be taken whenever acclimating this animal. Serpent Starfish must never receive exposure to air or be touched by human hands during acclimation or thereafter.
