Salvini Cichlid

First described as Cichlasoma salvini by Guenther in 1862, the Salvini Cichlid is now identified as Nandopsis salvini. Found in Central America and southern Mexico, this attractive cichlid grows to about 6 inches in length. The body color is golden/yellow with a black horizontal stripe along the midline and slightly below the dorsal fin. There are blue highlights on the body and fins, with a touch of red in the belly and tips of the anal and tail fins. The Salvini is not an overly aggressive cichlid and can be kept with medium and large Community Fish. They prefer shelters of rocks or driftwood and a fine gravel substrate, but will also require some open space for swimming. Pairs will spawn on a cleaned rock and both will defend the spawning site. Males will usually have a red dot on their gill plate, while females have a black spot and will develop more red in the belly. The Salvini is an omnivore and will accept most prepared aquarium foods, with occasional treats of meaty foods like blood worms, earth worms and krill. They are tolerant of most water parameters, preferring water with a neutral pH value. Nearly all Salvini available are farm raised for the aquarium hobby.
