Saddle Hogfish
Saddle Hogfish is a hardy fish with unique coloration. Scientifically identified as Bodianus bilunulatus, this fish undergoes a color transformation from juvenile to adulthood, but both color phases and the transition are all equally attractive. As a Juvenile, the Saddle Hogfish has a yellow head, red and white striping, and a large black area just before the tail. As an adult, the yellow is all in the tail area and the black area changes to a smaller eye or “saddle” spot. Like other Hogfish, the juveniles may clean parasites from other fish. It is not recommended for the reef aquarium, as larger specimens may feed on smaller invertebrates and may damage clam mantles. An active fish, it does require feedings multiple times per day and plenty of swimming space. Growing to over 21” in the wild, it rarely reaches over a foot in captivity. Brine shrimp, black worms, or saltwater feeder shrimp should be routinely provided to maintain best health.
