Red Parrot Cichlid
A man-made hybrid between a couple of South American Cichlids (Red Devils & Severums??), the Red Parrot Cichlid has quickly become a popular aquarium fish. The body shape is similar to the Red Devil, only the head has been morphed into a very beak like structure, like a parrot head. The body color can start out gray with black stripes, but usually develops into a solid red/orange color. Not quite as aggressive as other south American Cichlids, the Parrot is still pushy with other cichlids and amongst themselves. The larger they grow, the more aggressive they get. The Red Parrot can grow up to 6-8 inches in length, with a very thick body structure. Safe with most other large, non-cichlids, the Red Parrot will require open swimming areas with some cover to retreat into when resting. Sometimes the Red Parrot is sterile; sometimes it will be fertile. As an egg layer, it will usually pick out a smooth rock or dig a pit to spawn.
