Red Devil

Originally described by Gunther in 1864 as Cichlasoma labiatum, the Red Devil is now listed as Amphilophus labiatus. The generic name Red Devil applies to the general coloration of the fish; the adult shows a red/orange body color, and to its behavior. The Red Devil is very aggressive, especially towards other cichlids. It loves to dig in the substrate and will constantly rearrange the décor of the aquarium. Growing to about 10 inches in length, the Red Devil will require a large aquarium (55+ gallons) and a really good filtration system, with bi-weekly water changes. The male will develop a large nuchal hump, and is much more aggressive than the female. Juveniles may be gray with black striping, but they develop a red/orange body color as they mature. They may also have a few white blotches and black freckles on the body. As an omnivore, the Red Devil will eat most prepared aquarium foods and small live foods. It can adapt to most water conditions, from low to high pH values, temperatures from 76 to 84F. The Amphilophus citrinellum is also often sold under the trade name, Red Devil. It is a very similar fish, and may be a subspecies. The Red Devil spawns in a pit as an egg layer and both parents will aggressively defend the nesting area. The spawn can be as large as several hundred fry at one time. The Red Devil can be kept with fish like Bala Sharks, Tinfoil Barbs, Silver Dollars and large Gouramis.
