Males will typically become a dark green with some gold highlights, while females are rather plain in appearance and have a lighter color. These puffers are very good eaters, accepting nearly any frozen or live food small enough for them to eat. Live ghost shrimp, live brine shrimp, frozen blood worms, frozen brine shrimp are all good choices. Feeding flake and pellet food in limited quantities in order to offer variety is acceptable, but if feeding only dry and pellet food the fish will usually waste away and die. The Pea Puffer also loves to eat snails, so it can be a nice addition to planted aquariums which often experience an excess of nuisance snails.
These cute little dwarf puffers will only grow to a maximum size of about 3/4 of an inch, and unlike other freshwater and brackish puffers these fish get along with one another very well, and unlike larger puffers they usually get along very well with other small and peaceful tank mates.
