They are active, efficient scavengers who are more active and arguably more attractive than many other cleaners. These South American natives are constantly in motion, either in searching for leftover food at the bottom of the aquarium or making their way to the surface of the aquarium for a gulp of air. Corydoras catfish, like Bettas and Gouramis, have a labyrinth organ. They must visit the surface occasionally to avoid suffocation. Their vision is not as useful in finding food as the sensitive barbels found on either side of the mouth. Though its primary diet will be food remnants, Corydoras are particularly fond of tubifex worms and welcome they are always welcomed as a tasty treat.
