These gentle and peaceful fish have a maximum size of about 2 inches. Their main food requirement is Algae which is scraped off of leaves, rocks and glass sides of the aquarium; however, it will accept other types of foods. They are mainly gray-brown with a wide, dark band running from eye to peduncle. Typically, they have a dark blotch at the base of their tails. Because this fish is small in size, it is particularly useful in most aquariums because it can get into places most other algae removing fish cannot. It is important that these fish are in an aquarium with sufficient amounts of algae. Water conditions for the Otocinclus should be soft and slightly acidic with dense plant growth and good lighting. Temperatures should be between 70 and 85 degreees.
