Ornate Bichir
Ornate Bichir, Polypterus ornatipinnis, is said to be one of the more attractive members of this prehistoric-looking fish family. With its elongated body and dorsal fin displaying more prominently along the back half of its dorsal ridge, this fish is hardy and will survive in most water conditions. It will also survive for a time out of water using a modified labyrinth organ. In its native African waters, it will swim in the open, but will also use rock and driftwood cover where it will hide as it stalks its next prey. As an active swimmer, it can tend to jump and requires a covered aquarium. Plant structures will often be uprooted, but the Rough Stuff Plant Packages make an attractive, realistic addition that can often survive being brushed by its large, strong body. Bichirs are not particularly aggressive and will usually not bother other large fish it cannot eat and can be kept with fish like Silver Dollars, Tinfoil Barbs, Severums and Oscars. As it is found in Tanganyikan waters, it can do fine with other larger Tanganyikan Cichlids. As a carnivore, this fish will readily accept frequent feedings of pellet foods, worms, small feeder fish, Ghost Shrimp, or smaller crayfish.
