Oriental Sword
Oriental Sword, Echinodorus v. 'Oriental', is closely related to Echinodorus 'Rose.' The 'oriental' variant was first isolated in Singapore and has been since prized for its red to purple colorations. Like other Swords, E. oriental has a slow growth rate and typically finds itself as a centerpiece plant. The aquarium conditions for Swords should be slightly acidic with soft water. Reproduction can be a slow process with the Sword plants. Typically it is accomplished by enlarging the rhizome "root", however adventitious shoots growing off of the main plant is another tactic for propagation.
Notes: E. 'Oriental' is a hybrid, arising from E. 'Rose' in 1992 at Oriental Aquarium in Singapore.
