Organ Pipe Coral

Organ Pipe Coral, Tubipora musica, can resemble a Polyped Coral, but is identified as a Stony Coral because of its calcified frame. The tips of its tentacles extend from the tubular "pipes" by which it gets its common name. It is typically available in shades of green, red, or pink. Organ Pipe requires good water conditions including high lighting levels. Adequate water flow is necessary, but not strong nor direct enough to cause injury. With proper water conditions, which include carefully monitored calcium levels with the addition of strontium, Organ Pipe Coral can do fine in the home aquarium. It is, however, considered best for the intermediate to advanced aquarist. Unlike many other Stony Corals, the Organ Pipe does not contain the damaging sweeper tentacles that can reach out at night and may damage other corals placed too closely. It is important, however, to keep it a safe distance from other potentially damaging corals. Organ Pipe will benefit from feedings of any supplement designed for filter feeders. Iodine and strontium will help ensure its continued health.
