Neon Tetra
Neon Tetra, Hyphessobrycon innessi, is an aquarium favorite and a true eye-catcher. It is rumored that the first attempted introduction of Neon Tetras to the US was aboard the ill-fated air dirigible The Hindenburg. Since then, this fish has been introduced and has gained great favor with hobbyists. Originating from the Peruvian Amazon Basin, its white body with glowing blue and red stripes make a striking addition -- especially in schools of 12 or more. Black or dark gravel helps add to the dramatic effect. A peaceful fish, it is important to select aquarium citizens carefully, so that it does not get nipped at or eaten. With a maximum size of 1 to 1.5 inches, it can easily become the victim of bullying by more aggressive fish. Soft, clear, slightly acidic water of about 76 degrees will recreate its indigenous water conditions.
