Naso Tang

Found in the Indo-Pacific, the Naso lituratus or commonly knowns as the Naso Tang or Lipstick Tang. Adult Naso Tangs typically grow "streamers", as pictured here. An active swimmer, it should be provided with plenty of open swimming space and still have a few hiding places within the rock. Fairly peaceful, it is aggressive towards its own kind and similar Tangs. The spine that gives the Tangs their name is permanently erect on the Naso Tang, so care should always be taken to avoid injury. Sometimes difficult to adapt to prepared foods, it requires a vegetable based diet supplemented with zucchini, broccoli and spirulina. Introduction of brown macro-algae may help the eating cycle to begin. It is generally considered a "reef safe" fish, but may bother Large Polyped Stony Corals if underfed.
