Malcolor Snapper

Malcolor Snapper, Malcolor niger, is a markedly unique appearing fish as a juvenile. Discovered around the time of our country’s founding (1775), juveniles flow with their vivid mottling of black and white. The markings become less distinct as the fish ages. Some aggressive fish may nip at this gentle giant or keep it from finding ample food. Because it does grow large, the Malcolor Snapper needs ample space to grow (150-200 gallon minimum.) Also known as the Black Snapper, multiple specimens may be placed in the same aquarium (best done simultaneously), but adults are best kept singly. As with other Snappers, any shrimp, snails, or worms; any crustaceans, being part of its natural diet, will likely be eaten. Other meaty frozen preparations will typically be readily accepted. As an active swimmer, it is best to the feed Snappers multiple times daily or, at minimum, a good portion of food daily. A large, well-aerated aquarium and aquarium mates that can not be swallowed whole are essential elements for consideration when adding a member of the Snapper family.

Approximate Arrival Size for Snappers: Small 2 to 2.5 in.; Medium: 3 to 4.5 in.; Large: 5 to 6 in.
