Longfin Zebra Danio
A farm raised variety of the wild type Zebra Danio, Brachydanio rerio, originally found in eastern India by Hamilton in 1822. Longfin Zebra Danio is a very active, peaceful fish that prefer to school and will require some open space for swimming. The edges of the aquarium should be planted to make the Danios secure and to offer a hiding place when threatened. Mature females will have a broader, stouter body than the male. The Danio is an egg scatterer breeder, usually breeding in shallow water. To protect the eggs, you can place the female and several males in a shallow filled tank with eggcrate or even marbles over the bottom. The eggs will fall into the cracks/crevasses and be protected from the adults. The Danio is an omnivore and will eat most all prepared aquarium foods. Growing to about 2 ½” in length, they will display best when kept in groups of at least six or more. The Longfin Danio has been selected for its flowing fins, sometimes nearly doubling the body length. The coloration has a golden body background with steel blue horizontal markings with a thin red line in-between.
