Lifali Jewel Cichlid
The Lifalili Jewel Cichlid, Hemichromis lifalili, originated in Central Africa specifically in the tributaries of the Zaire (Congo) and Ubanghi Rivers. This Cichlid has a striking blood-red body with variations of yellow and turquoise. This fish is only for the Advanced aquarist because he is very aggressive. This means he is not a community safe fish and as far as inter-species compatibility you will need to keep him with similar-sized fish that can handle themselves. In captivity, the Lifalili Jewel will grow up to 5" (13 cm) in length. Since he maintains a large territory he should be kept in at least a 30 gallon tank with a water temperature range of 73-79° F (23-26° C). Provide this Cichlid with lots of rocks, and hiding places, being that he enjoys digging in the substrate. The Lifalili Jewel is an omnivore, and requires both algae-based (flake) & meaty foods (freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, & brine shrimp). In regards to sexing this species: The females are brighter colored than the males.
