Insidiator Wrasse
Insidiator Wrasse, Epibulus insidiator, is a curiosity of a fish as its jaw extends nearly half its body length. Also known as the Slingjaw Wrasse, This typical-looking fish stores a prey-catching device in its gill area. When the need to reach for food approaches, its jaw will sling forward forming a tube. Suction helps ensnare its meal. As a juvenile, the Insidiator Wrasse is a brown-maroon color with white striping, greatly resembling the Possum Wrasse. After transformation to adult coloration, it is a distinctive yellow. Although fish will only grow dependent on the amount of size provided, plenty of swimming space should be allowed as this fish grows to nearly two feet in the wild. As with other members of the Wrasse family, its diet should be carnivorous including meaty frozen foods or Brine Shrimp. Although in the wild it eats primarily crustaceans and small fish, the Insidiator Wrasse will not often bother any established Cleaner Shrimp of average or above average size.
