Imported Doitsu Japanese Descent Koi

Doitsu variety koi have their origin in Germany, and were originally brought into Japan in the late 1800s as a food source rather than for ornamental purposes. The scales of Doitsu koi differ from those of standard Japanese koi. There are two common versions of the Doitsu koi, one being Kagami-goi or mirror carp and the other being Kawas-goi which means leather carp. Mirror Doitsu have very shiny reflective scales along their back and along their lateral lines on the side of the fish. The “leather carp” variety has either no scales at all, or only a single line of scales along each side. The koi of Japanese descent we offer here at Petsolutions are AAA quality rated and hand picked for quality of not only color but also body conformation. When koi are shown at events in Asia, they are usually shown in round pools and they are always viewed from above. Koi when viewed from the side do not show their best color, as the majority of the pigment is on the top side of the fish.

Koi can grow to be quite large at adult size, so a large pond of hundreds or thousands of gallons is recommended for the koi to remain at its best. Many varieties of quality pellet and stick formula pond foods are available for koi, and will be the base of any koi diet.
