Honeycomb Puffer
The Honeycomb Puffer (Canthigaster janthinoptera) occurs naturally in the Indo Pacific region. While this little fish may be tempting to keep in your reef tank due to its small size and playful personality, placing the Honeycomb in a reef tank would result in devastation for reef inhabitants. Parts of their natural diet in the wild include sponge, corals, and invertebrates so it is not at all a good choice for a reef or semi reef aquarium. In the home aquarium the diet for this fish should be meaty frozen foods such as krill and squid but also some shelled shrimp from the grocery to help wear down its “beak”.
When transferring these fish from tank to tank or out of it’s shipping bag, it is important that the fish is not exposed to air in the process. This exposure will cause undue stress and agitation for the fish, and could cause damage to the animal.
