Green Severum
A member of the South American cichlids, the green Severum is properly known as the Heros sererus, first described by Heckel in 1840. Though territorial, the Severum is rather peaceful and similar to Angel Fish in temperment. They will match up with most medium to large Community fish and other “peaceful” cichlds. Best kept in pairs of small groups, juveniles will start with several black vertical stripes on a gray/green body with small red/black freckles. As they mature, the Severum will loss most of the stripes, except for the one nearest the tail. They will develop larger black spots below the midline and more intense red freckles. Somewhat difficult to pair in the aquarium, males will normally develop markings in the head region, often a light green color. The Severum will prefer soft, acidic Ph water, but can adapt to most water parameters. While its natural diet is small fish and insects, it will adapt to most prepared aquarium foods. Be sure to offer meaty foods like blood worms or krill for an occasional treat. The Severum is somewhat shy, but can develop a “bond” with their owners.
