Gold Dust Lyretail Molly
Gold Dust Lyretail Molly, Molliensia velifera, is a hybridized variety of the Sailfin Molly. This fish is an American native with its origin in the brackish waters of the Gulf of Mexico, East Coast Florida, and East Coast Carolinas. The Molly is found throughout the Southern U.S. in quiet pools, canal ways, and ponds. As a brackish water fish, it is always good to keep some aquarium salt in the water. This amount can vary between a teaspoon per five gallons to a teaspoon per gallon, depending on the preferences of the aquarium's other inhabitants. A prolific breeder, this fish's overpopulation has become a problem in other parts of the world where it has been introduced. The female can be expected to give birth to 10 to 50 young every couple of months. When breeding them, many small-leaved plants, or floating plants should be provided to help protect the young. A hearty eater, the Molly requires vegetable matter (algae or spirulina), but is considered an omnivore. The Molly is a fish that may be aggressive as it grows older, but is still considered a great community aquarium fish.
