This fish is often added to an aquarium for the purpose of helping keep the tank free of algae. The gold algae eater is an herbivore, but it may also consume non herbivore specific fish food if no other food is available to it. This is a very active fish that will make its way around the aquarium quickly, and its narrow body (while small) can fit into hard to reach spaces in order to reach algae. A gold algae eater may be aggressive toward others of its kind when defending home territory, and they may also damage large flat fish such as angels and discus.
