There are several variations of the Aulonocara species, each with slightly different color. As an adult the male of this species develops amazing color, while the female is less colorful it is still a very interesting fish to keep. Often thought of as a hybrid cichlid, that is not the case, as this fish was produced by selective breeding. It is not a new type of fish, it is simply a variant of the original Aulonocara. Much like other African cichlids, this fish will be happiest in an aquarium with plenty of rockwork as cover.
