German Blue Ram
The German Ram is a cultivated morph of the wild type Ram, Microgeophagus ramirezi first described by Myers and Harry in 1948. Originally from South America, the Ram is one of the more colorful dwarf cichlids. The back half of the body is a light blue while the front has red and yellow with a black vertical stripe through the eye. There is also a black color to the first few rays of the dorsal fin. The male will usually have more color and the second ray of the dorsal fin is extended. Females will develop a more intense red coloration when preparing to spawn. The German Blue Ram is beautiful with smaller, sculpted fins. The German Longfin Ram has been selected to have elongated fins and a larger body than the wild type Ram. They will grow to about 3 inches in length and prefer some open areas with cover along the perimeter safe with most other small to medium Community fish, the German Ram can make an exciting addition to the aquarium. Their diet should include meaty foods and some vegetable products. The Ram is very demanding of great water quality, with low nitrates critical to their long-term health.
