Geophagus translates to “earth eater” and that holds true with this fish as it will often do quite a bit of digging as it looks for food. This fish is a mouth brooder, which is out of the ordinary for a South American cichlid. This fish will eat nearly any type of fish food it is offered, so feeding it is rarely ever an issue. Males of this fish will develop a maroon colored bump on its head.
