Flower Horn Cichlid
One of the new “man-made” cichlids, the Flower Horn Cichlid was first developed in S.E. Asia as an alternative to the Discus. Thought to be a cross between Severums and some other South American cichlid, the general body shape is like the Cichlasoma festae. Available in many color morphs, the Flower Horn has been developed to exhibit lots of colors in the head and body regions. As a cichlid, the Flower Horn is somewhat aggressive, especial towards other cichlid species. Best kept in pairs or harems to avoid overly aggressive males. Males will generally show more color, and may have a more pointed dorsal fin. As a farm raised fish, they will accept most prepared foods, especially meaty-based foods like krill and bloodworms. The Flower Horn can reach up to 10-12 inches in length, and males may develop a significant nuchal hump.
