This fish gets its common name from its longer pectoral fins as an adult, giving them a bit of a wing like appearance. This fish is usually a dark gray to black in appearance with spots, making it a very attractive fish for the home aquarium. This fish can be a little territorial when it picks out a hiding place to call home, especially territorial in regard to other Plecostomus. This fish will do best when offered a meaty diet when being introduced to a new aquarium and standard algae wafers should also be offered. Once the fish has settled in to the aquarium, it can receive less meaty food and more algae based food but should always be offered some meaty food.
