This fish was once incorrectly thought to be a cichlid, but has since been reclassified as a pupfish (killifish) that is native to the United States. This fish is sometimes also known as the American Flag Fish, and is an algae eating champ when it comes to both wild behavior and captive behavior. This fish is a model citizen in a community tank and does very well as an algae eater in both planted and non planted aquaria. In planted tanks, live plants with thin and feathery leaves will not be safe with this fish but broad leaf plants will be just fine.
