Firemouth Cichlid
Firemouth Cichlid, Cichlasoma meeki, is peaceful for a cichlid, but should still be considered a semi-aggressive fish. The blue-gray body with black markings is consistent in coloration between males and females. The bright red area which extends from the lower gill area and continuing across the belly, its most notable feature, is more prevalent in the males. Pairs and trios typically get along well, even in a community environment (with fish that are not too small.) Males can display their colors and do some battling amongst themselves. Males may also injure or kill any female who is not ready to breed when he is. Males do grow slightly larger than females, about 5 inches as opposed to a maximum length of 4 inches for females.
Approximate arrival size for Firemouth Cichlid: 1 to 2.5 inches
