Fantail Filefish
Fantail Filefish, Pervagor spilosoma, is popular because of its exceptional color scheme, general hardiness, and peaceful demeanor. Often collected in Hawaiian waters, it is a cream color with brown striations coming down its face and a brown mottled pattern throughout the body. Its tail is a stark contrast in color and form with its orange-then-brown-then-yellow color transformation. This Filefish has a personality similar to the Dwarf Puffer (“Toby) family and can tend to nip fins of longer-finned, slower-moving companions. As omnivores, Filefish readily adapt to a diet of frozen or live shrimp such as Mysis Shrimp or Brine Shrimp. Spirulina, Formula Two, or seaweed sheets such as Sea Veggies should be provided to help sate its need for herbivorous nutrition. Frequent feedings, multiple times daily, will help to ensure best health. It is not recommended for a reef aquarium due to its penchant for eating invertebrates.
