Epaulette Shark
Epaulette Shark, Hemiscyllium ocellatum, is an Australian native that adapts well to aquarium life. Not recommended for taller aquariums or for, long-term, for any aquarium under 250 gallons, it needs a soft, sandy substrate. Naturally, it is found in shallower waters and often in tidal flats where it is found to be tolerant of the lower oxygen levels found there. As with most sharks, other sharp rock or other objects must be avoided as jagged edges can cause abrasions that lead to infection. However, this shark does live among enormous reefs of Acropora colonies, so is more accustomed to avoiding scrapes than the open-water swimming sharks. As with other Sharks, it is intolerant of copper-based antibiotics or the presence of copper in source water. Initially, it may be hesitant to feed. Squid or any available Feeder Shrimp can help entice its appetite. Food soaked in preparations such as Garlic Guard have also been known to help in this process. Sharks in captivity should typically be food a few prey items a few times a week. The Epaulette tends to be a nocturnal feeder and, to some extent, is more of a nocturnal animal. It will tolerate other sharks in the same aquarium, but two males from this family (which includes the Bamboo Cat Shark and Marbled Cat Sharks) may act territorial. When provided with the proper care, the Epaulette Shark is possibly one of the best sharks to maintain for experienced home aquarists.
This fish requires special care and is traditionally difficult to keep. It is, therefore, recommended only for the advanced aquarist or for aquatic research facilities.
