The adult male has electric blue horizontal stripes on a dark blue background and black edging to the fins. The anal fin will also have several "egg dummies" which are thought to aid in fertilizing the eggs during the spawning ritual. The female is a mouth brooder and will carry the fertilized eggs for 14-21 days before releasing the free swimming fry.
