Electric Blue Johanni Cichlid

The Electric Blue Johanni adds color and activity to the home aquarium. First described by Eccles in 1973, it is classified as Melanochromis johanni and is found in the rocky regions of Lake Malawi in Africa. Also known as the Bluegray Mbuna, the Johanni will require large rock formations with lots of hiding places. Juveniles and adult females will have an orange color body with black edging to their fins. The adult male has electric blue horizontal stripes on a dark blue background and black edging to the fins. The anal fin will also have several "egg dummies" which are thought to aid in fertilizing the eggs during the spawning ritual. The female is a mouth brooder and will carry the fertilized eggs for 14-21 days before releasing the free swimming fry. As is standard with most African Cichlids, it is best to keep one male with several females. The Johani can be housed with larger African Cichlids, if provided with enough rock formations in which to hide. They will eat vegetable based foods and also meaty foods like bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp. Most Johanni are farm raised and the color has been genetically enhanced versus the wild type. The Johanni will require frequent partial water changes to maintain optimal water quality.
