Koi can survive winters in many areas of the U.S. Simply allow oxygen exchange by ensuring that a hole exists in any solid ice that might form on the top of the pond. These gentle giants can live in captivity for decades. They are aggressive eaters, yet can adapt to eat from the owner's hand. Koi are omnivores and will eat a variety of high-quality flake or pellet food. All plant roots in a pond should be protected, as the Koi will enjoy the tasty treat of any exposed plant roots.
