Convict Cardinalfish
Convict Cardinalfish, Apongon novemfasciatus, makes a great schooling fish for the home aquarium. This durable fish makes a great aquarium “cycling fish” that is attractive enough to keep thereafter. Some recommend grouping them in schools of at least five or seven, but a smaller grouping should still do fine. Also known as the Ninebanded Cardinal, it is a great choice for the home reef or non-aggressive, fish-only aquarium. These characteristics include its maximum size of around three inches, its assertiveness in desiring to swim more in the open than others of its genus, and its general durability in terms of hardiness. This fish displays no aggression toward other fish or corals, but some specimens may choose to harm very small shrimp. Care should be taken to ensure that other species do not pick on the Convict Cardinal, as it is generally peaceful. It will accept a variety of foods including Brine Shrimp and bloodworms, and will typically accept flake food fairly easily.
