Congo Tetra

Perhaps one of the best looking Characins, the Phenacogrammus interruptus is best known as the Congo Tetra. As the name implies, this fish was discovered in the Congo region by Boulenger in 1899. A peaceful, schooling fish the Congo Tetra will require a fair amount of swimming space with secluded areas of plants in which to retreat when they feel threatened. Relatively shy, this Tetra is very sensitive to loud noises and high nitrates. The Congo Tetra has a golden body color, and the male develops light blue horizontal stripe below the midline and at the crest of the back. The male Congo Tetra also will develop an elongated dorsal fin and long extension from the middle of the tail fin. The scales will take on iridescent speckles as the fish matures, providing a stunning display in the aquarium The Congo Tetra will adapt to most prepared aquarium foods, though it may at first be a shy eater.
