Common Oscar, Astronotus Ocellatus, is found in Eastern Venezuela and the Amazon Basin to Paraguay. These fish are aggressive and will likely attack and swallow smaller fish in the same aquarium. For this reason, it is important that only very small Common Oscars be kept with other fish. A pair of Oscars will usually get along quite well. These fish can grow to 12 inches in length and have quite exotic markings. The Common Oscar's popularity stems from their personality. They have been known to eat out of the hand of their owners. Typically, the Oscar is dark brown with light brown to yellow mottled markings. Males will have red makings on their bodies. Oscars are very greedy eaters who prefer their food in large chunks. They should be fed live fish, snails, etc. Water conditions aren't critical with this hardy animal although the temperature should stay between 72 and 82 degrees.
