Chocolate Bumblebee Dart Frog
This particular variety is originated by the same person responsible for the D. Tinctorius “Patricia” variety, and these were purchased from her. Currently Patricia is the only one doing these in the world as far as we are aware. The best way to describe the size of these frogs, is that if it lays down on a quarter it would pretty well fill up the quarter. They are quarter sized or a little larger. This frog is a Leucomelas, and is similar to the standard Bumblebee only with a rich chocolate coloring where the black would normally be found. One interesting fact that makes this frog different from the normal Bumblebee is that the tadpoles of this little frog are translucent rather than black.
Poison dart frogs, also called poison-arrow frogs or simply poison frogs, belong to the Dendrobatidae family. These frogs are diurnal so they are active during the day and rest at night. They are found in areas of South America and have heavy populations in Costa Rica. In the wild these frogs are toxic, but when bred in captivity they do not have the same toxic properties.
