Chinese Algae Eater
Chinese Algae Eater, Gyrinocheilus Aymonieri, is found throughout Thailand. Also known as the Siamese Algae Eater, they are usually quite peaceful and will seldom exceed 5 inches in the aquarium. Their sides are brown with a lighter shade on their belly. They also have a dark horizontal line that extends from snout to caudal base. This species has an under-slung mouth that forms a sucking disc. A vegetarian, the Chinese Algae Eater has a slit behind its gills that allows fresh water to be exhaled for breathing. It does an excellent job of cleaning algae. This fish will also feast on dried foods, a spinach leaf or even crushed lettuce if algae is not readily available in the aquarium. The water conditions for this fish should be clean, well-aerated and slightly alkaline. To promote algal growth, plenty of sunlight should be able to enter the tank. Water temperature should range from between 75 and 80 degrees. This fish will make a welcome addition to the home of aquarists of any experience level.
Approximate arrival size for Chinese Algae Eaters: 1 to 2.5 inches
